LOOK at me look AT me look at ME
ok. ok. OK OK OK.
enough already.
self righteous anger and indignation abounds and here's some more:
this sad sick little cho dude -- he does what? he packs his whole little manifesto up, throws in some videos and he sends it to NBC.
and what happens? it's everywhere. it's the cho show. just as he would have wanted it. possibly even better than he could ever have imagined. oh he knew he was onto something. he knew he'd be quite a big hit. he knew he'd have all the focus and attention and glory and power a guy could ever want. he's the king of fear tonight.
CNN website (yeah i peeked but didn't watch it and no, i'm not going to link to it for you) has posted a video of him -- plastered right on the front page top left corner staring right into the camera with the gun pointing right at you. yes you. you too can look right down the barrel of cho's gun and shudder at his awesome power over you! feel the fear baby! gives you shivers, eh?
now that's terror.
no. not cho. he's just a sick sad lost little messed up wounded puppy with a damn hot mean streak full of vengeance and revenge and impotence and angst and loneliness.
no the real terror is this great giant glob blob of media. meeedjah. the fame machine. the celebrity fascination. the power of the powerless. the thrill of the vicarious voyeurs.
a.k.a. the eye of sauron.
yeah it's all about the focus.
the attention.
the screaming voice of the unheard. the ignored. the insignificant made into star.
it's celebrity makeover time!
cho would be so proud. the CNN page alone is like the best EVER myspace page dude. all the top fifty stories and side stories and videos are all cho all murder all the time.
oh and his heroes -- in his great manifesto -- apparently he mentions dylan and eric -- the great celebrity martyrs in his mind. oh yeah. that's right. you know the columbine thang? well let me tell you here in colorado they drag that thing out every freaking chance they get. as these media hyped fed encouraged school shootings become all the rage, all the fashion, all the excitement, all the seventy-two point type CAMPUS CARNAGE headlines, here in colorado we got the copyright on that one see, we get to drag out columbine and compare it you know. oh well we have to say the tally is in and we win the big prize. we win the media purple heart here see because we've got the biggest and the best don't you know? the first of its kind. the sensation that started it all.
these days these days these school shootings these kids these video kids these sad lost media-fed out of the mouths of babes comes oatmeal or out of the mouths of babes comes blood and guns and bang bang shoot em up cowboys here in colorado they turned columbine into this big freaking tourist attraction people put up a bunch of big crosses on a hill for everybody to stop by and drop off their stuff or steal a memento snap a little photo of the family mourning at the site you know got to capitalize got to show it all the public wants to know the public the public he public needs to mourn we will tell you how to mourn we will tell you how to feel we will do it for you we will show you every single sad twisted detail we will get so much mileage out of this you have no idea we just got to stare at the car wreck and if it bleeds it leads and as long as these school shootings keep happening by gum we'll keep them glued to the tube to the papers to the headlines clicking on the buttons checking out the latest got to have the latest and we've got to justify it this morbid curiosity don't you know got to say well we just have to do this because everybody needs to know wants to know wants to UNDERSTAND yeah we want to UNDERSTAND it so much we want to judge it and give out our answers and say tisk tisk tisk what a shame oh how awful can you believe gasp gasp my my what a tragedy what a tragedy what a tragedy desperately living through other people's lives in some sort of numb desensitized thrill seeking desire to feel something anything anything anything but our own reality anything but the truth only the pain of others only the pain we focus on the pain so sensational because we believe that it's real we believe in the pain we grasp the pain oh it hurts so good it scares us it grieves us it hurts us must be important must be news must be profound must be tragic must be something must be real.
yeah cho he got the message loud and clear. he knew this was his big moment of sensational glorious powerful fame. he made quite the splash. this was his statement.
and he just knew the media would be entirely complicit. he sends his stuff to a major network. of course. accessories to the crime. assistants to his project. special effects advisors and promotional experts. selling you that packaged horror show. the killers they know where to send their work you see they know who will make them famous make their statements for them, who will complete their part of the contract and do the bidding of the murderers. tormenting the families of the victims. scaring the crap out of the public. spreading the fear and pain. spreading that fear and pain.
works for cho, works for the media, works for our vain self-glorifying distraction. nothing like it for the ratings. nothing like it. milk it milk it work it work it work it. it's catching on big. it's the latest trend don't you know. it's practically on fire with possibility. after all the specials and the documentaries and the interviews and the theories and the talking heads and the re-enactments and the diagrams then there will be the lawsuits and the experts and the what we should do and how we will have to prepare for the unprepare-able and the endless improvements and safety precautions and the rules and procedures then there will be the books and the movie and the t-shirts and the lunch boxes and of course of course of course the video game.
we are the looky-loos we can not look away. we will not read the news about the war in iraq -- no. that involves our responsibility. no. we'll just pretend that isn't even going on. we're going to focus on this. this is meaningful. this is important. this is more exciting than brittany's haircut. this is feeding our fear. our fear that we grip so tightly about us. the fear that we use to justify our actions.
we live in a world of suicide bombings. we live in a world of school shootings.
and we wonder why? do we really wonder why? really?
where is the line? where is the sand?
what is analysis and what is regurgitation and what is reporting and what is sensationalizing and what is news and what is hype and what is real what is real what is real?
sorrow. pain. suffering. anger. violence. loss. grief. confusion. fear.
lather rinse repeat.
get it?
so you want to do something for the families? give them some space.
let them have some privacy. give them love and support and cards and flowers and create foundations and donations and do whatever you can but give them some space. let them grieve. cherish the memory of those lost. wish them well. hold them in your thoughts and carry them in your heart and love them and comfort them and let them be.
but don't give this cho dude another thought. don't pay him any mind. yeah i know he wants you to. he created quite the splash. he got your attention. but you don't have to play along. you don't have to buy into it. you do not have to feed the cho demon. you don't have to help him run his media show. you can look away.
so shift the focus. show us the love. show us the outpouring of support. show us the kindnesses. the friends. help us see that their needs are met. help us grieve with them. help them forgive us for intruding on their grief. show us the heroes. tell us about the teacher who saved his classroom of kids. tell us how we can help. show us the strength of the survivors. help them recover. help us all recover. help us clean up the mess and take care of the wounded.
think of the families of the victims.
please?
peace.
I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around,
and don't let anybody tell you different.
